Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People's Bank of China, speaks during a news conference at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - World Bank meetings, in Singapore September 17, 2006. The bank raised the key savings and lending interest rates, beginning from March 18. [Reuters]
The People's Bank of China, the central bank, raised key savings and lending interest rates from Sunday, March 18, the third time in 11 months in a bid to curb inflation and asset bubbles in the world's fastest-growing major economy.
The one-year benchmark lending rate will be raised to 6.39 percent from 6.12 percent, and the one-year deposit rate will be increased to 2.79 percent from 2.52 percent, according to a statement on the bank's website (***) .
Central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan is concerned that cash from a record trade surplus is stoking excess investment, raising the risk of accelerating inflation and boom-and-bust cycles in asset prices. Zhou has resisted calls from Europe and the US to let the yuan strengthen at a faster pace, making China's exports more expensive.
The central bank said, said in a statement posted on its website, that this interest rates adjustment will be conducive to the rational growth of credit and investment; conducive to maintaining a stable price level; conducive to the steady operation of the financial system; conducive to the balanced economic growth and structural optimization, and conducive to promoting sound and fast groth of the national economy.
"The data released in the past week suggests that the economy is not actually slowing and that the government is becoming quite concerned that the economy is disproportionally driven by investment and production," Glenn Maguire, chief Asia economist at Societe Generale SA in Hong Kong, said.
"The central bank will probably raise interest rates again two more times this year," Maguire said. Fixed-asset investment in urban areas climbed 23.4 percent in the first two months, down from 24.5 percent for all of 2006. China still must act to slow investment, Ma Kai, head of the National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top planning body, said last week.

The Wright Brothers(莱特兄弟)
It lasted only 12 seconds, but those 12 seconds changed history. On December 17, 1903, two brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first airplane flight.
Wilbur Wright was born in 1867. Orville was born in 1871. Neither boy graduated from high school, but mechanical things fascinated the young Wright brothers. They taught themselves math and engineering.
The brothers decided to build a flying machine in 1896. They also were determined to learn how to control flight safely. They began experimenting with large kites.
In 1900 the brothers built several huge kites with wings large enough to carry a person and tested their flights near the town of Kitty Hawk on the coast of North Carolina. This location was ideal. Steady winds from the ocean lifted the kite into the air. The kite crashed on sand dunes, which was safer than crashing into trees or solid ground. Wilbur actually flew on the kite for a few seconds.
Then, the Wrights made a lot of improvement to their flights while they were testing again and again.
At last, the brothers built an engine-powered flying machine with a propeller. Their plane weighed 750 pounds (340 kilograms). Its wings stretched 40 feet (12 meters) across.
On December 17, 1903, Orville made the first successful flight. He stayed in the air for 12 seconds. Wilbur also made flights that day. In the last flight Wilbur stayed in the air for 59 seconds and traveled 852 feet (260 meters)!
The brothers continued perfecting their plane. They practiced piloting machines with more powerful engines. These planes made longer flights and sharper turns.
The Wrights gave public demonstrations of flying in both the United States and Europe. Orders for planes rolled in from governments around the world. In 1909, the brothers formed the Wright Company to build airplanes. By that time they’d produced a plane stable enough for a 20-mile (32-kilometer) flight.
Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912. Orville sold the company in 1915 and spent time doing more research. By 1918, other companies had begun to build airplanes. Orville won many awards for his work before his death in 1948.

The United Nations Population Fund ( UNFPA) released here on Thursday a report on the world population in 2011 themed, "Human beings and opportunities in the world of seven billion people".
Addressing at the press briefing, UNFPA Representative in Vietnam Bruce Campbell said the world's population will reach seven billion on October 31. Witnessing this event, people can join hands to change this opportunity into actions so as to make a better life for everybody.
"The number is a challenge to us. While we have achieved solid foundations for human development, there are still differences and big gap between the rich and the poor. Never before have so many people got hurt by such issues as the loss of food security, lack of water, and occurrence of natural calamities," said Campbell.
According to the report, the population record is considered a success, because it means that people throughout the world can live longer. However, it is a challenge to all. With the current growth, the world will have more 78 million people each year, leading to increasing demands on natural resources and big pressure on the planet.
Responsibility should be taken for the development of the 1.8 billion youth and juvenile at the age of 10-24 years old who account for more than one-fourth of the world's population, among them 90 percent are living in developing countries, said the report.
Data from the 2009 census showed that Vietnam has entered the "golden" population age with young people accounting for one-third of the country's population.
According to UNFPA's 2010 report, Vietnam's population was 89 million by the end of 2010 and would be around 111.7 million by 2050. The country is ranked 14th among the world's most populated countries.
